Nobian’s net-zero science-based targets validated by SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative)

22 August 2024

We have had our near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi has validated our scope 1 and 2 net-zero science-based target by 2040, as well as our compliance with SBTi's 1.5°C mitigation pathways for reaching net-zero by 2050, or sooner.

Nobian’s scope 1 and 2 targets in line with 1.5°C trajectory
The SBTi’s has assessed Nobian’s scope 1 and 2 2040 reduction targets and has determined that those are in line with a 1.5°C trajectory. The SBTi has also evaluated the company's scope 1, 2, and 3 long-term targets, and has determined that those are aligned with the SBTi's 1.5°C mitigation pathways for reaching net-zero by 2050, or sooner. It has validated that the science-based greenhouse gas emissions reductions target(s) submitted by Nobian are conform the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. It defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets. By joining the SBTi, Nobian is ensuring that its climate action is in line with the latest science and is taking important steps to contribute to a net zero economy.

Decarbonization journey
Marco Waas, Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer at Nobian: “We are very proud that Nobian's emission reduction targets are recognized by the SBTi. This recognition commends our ambitious net-zero target, currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process. Nobian’s science-based targets are a key element in our decarbonization journey, maximizing transparency and accountability. Together with our consecutive Platinum EcoVadis ratings and our membership of the CDP, this achievement validates and demonstrates Nobian's progress towards decarbonization and becoming carbon neutral by 2040 in scope 1 and 2, ahead of the Paris agreement. It supports our mission to “Grow Greener Together” as well as our ambition to be one of the most sustainable chemical companies in Europe.”

Nobian commits to reach net-zero GHG emissions and across the value chain by Y2050
Nobian has submitted two near-term targets and two long-term targets for validation by the SBTi. All targets have been assessed against the SBTi’s quantitative and qualitative criteria, alongside the Criteria Assessment Indicators. For approval, a company’s targets must comply with all applicable requirements. In line with the SBTi Criteria, Nobian must review its targets against the latest criteria and guidance within five years, and if necessary, recalculate and revalidate them for continued recognition by the SBTi.

The following is an overview of the approved targets:

* Near-Term Targets: Nobian commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 50% by 2030 from a 2020 base year.* Nobian also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 25% within the same timeframe. *The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.

* Long-Term Targets: Nobian commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 100% by 2040 from a 2020 base year.* Nobian also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 within the same timeframe. *The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
