In December 2024, we have signed a tailor-made agreement with the Dutch government to accelerate our carbon reduction efforts to almost zero carbon emissions by 2030, a decade ahead of our original target. This tailor-made agreement between Nobian and the Dutch government sets a precedent for accelerated sustainability in the industry. By achieving near zero carbon emissions by 2030, we demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation, paving the way for a greener future.
Key projects and environmental benefits
The agreement consists of a number of impactful projects in the Netherlands that will enable this acceleration.
- We will replace the gas-fired evaporation plants in Hengelo and Delfzijl with electric-powered industrial heat pumps.
- We will accelerate the replacement of the electrolysis capacity for chlorine production in Rotterdam with the latest technology. A circular project to recover salt from residual streams is also part of the agreement.
- We will enhance energy efficiency in our production processes and re-use residual streams, contributing to a reduction of more than 0.5 million tons of CO₂ annually compared to 2020.
- Our projects will also reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions by approximately 400 tons, aiming for near-zero nitrogen emissions by 2030. Gas consumption will be reduced by about 300 million m³ annually compared to 2020, equivalent to the consumption of 250,000 households.
- The decrease in electricity consumption for chlorine production by 135 GWh annually compared to 2020 will create additional capacity for flexible production, grid balancing and reducing congestion.
- Water savings are expected to be 1.7 million m³, along with a 90MW reduction in heat loss.
