E-Flex to support grid stabilization

Flexibilization of our chlorine plants, 2022

Transforming our chlorine plants

Growing volumes of wind and solar energy mean electricity supplies fluctuate, but the power grid should be balanced 24/7. We are transforming our chlorine plants so they can operate in a flexible way to support grid stabilization.

Flexible production

In other words, rather than steady operation, we will be able to quickly reduce energy consumption when there is a shortage of power on the grid and then scale up again when there is sufficient supply. This means changing process control, increasing automation, and altering our operational mindset.

One of our notable results in 2022 was to increase the flexibility of our Delfzijl plant from 30% to 50% within just fifteen minutes. We are employing a structured program, ‘E-flex to the max’, that will accelerate the flexibilization of all chlorine plants and the electrical part of salt production.
