New power purchase agreements (PPAs)

New PPAs in 2023

Expanding our renewable energy portfolio through power purchase agreements (PPAs)

Nobian entered into three new PPAs in 2023, while the Mutkalampi windpark in Finland, for which we signed a PPA in late 2020, started commercial operations. These long-term commitments by Nobian and our (consortium) partners make a significant contribution to meeting our renewable energy targets and are great examples of how the industry is contributing to the transition to a sustainable energy system.

Pottendijk, The Netherlands

The first PPA involved a long-term deal with Shell for the purchase of approximately half of the 157 GWh annual production of the combined solar and wind farm Pottendijk in Drenthe. The project, which was developed by Shell, supplies Nobian with renewable electricity from January 1 2024.

From February 2023, it had 14 wind turbines in operation with a combined capacity of around 50 MW and 90,000 solar panels with a total capacity of also 50 MW. To put the volume into perspective, it generates enough electricity to meet about one third of the total electricity consumption of the residents and businesses in the municipality of Emmen. The renewable electricity from this wind and solar farm is an important addition to our renewable energy portfolio to reduce Scope 2 emissions from the production of salt, chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen.

Valgenweg, The Netherlands

Following this, Nobian signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Axpo. Under the PPA, Axpo will supply solar energy to Nobian's operations in Delfzijl from a facility developed by WIRCON, an international solar energy developer. Under the 15-year agreement, Axpo will purchase 17 GWh of renewable energy annually from a WIRCON solar farm and supply it to Nobian's production facilities. This is equivalent to the annual consumption of almost 6,000 Dutch households and saves the equivalent of more than 6,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. The renewable electricity Nobian purchases from the WIRCON solar farm Valgenweg, located near the Delfzijl chemical park, helps to reduce the Scope 2 emissions from our salt, chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen production in Delfzijl.

Gemini Wind Park, The Netherlands

The next PPA was a multi-year deal with PZEM to purchase electricity from the Gemini offshore wind park on the Dutch North Sea located 55 km north of Ameland. Nobian commited to purchasing 300 GWh of renewable energy in 2024, increasing to 500 GWh in 2025. The PPA equals around 10-15% of Nobian's annual electricity consumption, which is comparable to the consumption of 90,000-150,000 households, and is a total reduction of more than 500,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. The agreement is an important next step to achieve Nobian's goal of 100% renewable energy and carbon neutrality by 2040.

Gemini Wind Park is one of the largest wind parks in the Netherlands and an important part of the renewable energy infrastructure.

Mutkalampi, Finland

The Mutkalampi project was officially opened in June 2023, marking the successful closure of the  first consortium power purchase agreement in Finland in a partnership between Nobian, Signify, HEINEKEN and Philips. The ten-year agreement commits the consortium to purchase renewable electricity from the Mutkalampi wind farm, the largest active wind farm in Finland.

Mutkalampi will supply the consortium with 330 GWh of renewable electricity per year - enough to power 40,000 Finnish households. This renewable electricity helps to avoid more than 230,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year in Finland. The electricity is physically delivered to the Finnish grid, while the four consortium partners benefit from guarantees of origin. This provides revenue stability for the renewable project while guaranteeing clean energy for the consortium members.
