With its leading activities, Nobian is the basis of the highly integrated industrial chain at the Chemie Park Delfzijl. With more than 250 employees, Nobian produces, processes and distributes salt, as well as steam, electricity and energy, chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen. With three plants at this dynamic and sustainable location, one company's product is the raw material for another.
Divided into four themes - hydrogen, underground energy storage, electrification and brine availability - we have many projects related to innovation and sustainability. For hydrogen, we are involved in the operation of the hydrogen ship WEVA, the development of a hydrogen logistics hub and pipeline network, and Delfzijl is the landing site for two hydrogen plants.
For brine availability, we are working on new brine fields in addition to recycling residual streams. This is important not only for the continuity of our operations, but also for the success of the energy transition. We have already developed caverns for the underground storage of natural gas and nitrogen and are now working on initiatives for hydrogen and compressed air.
In terms of electrification, Nobian in Delfzijl contributes to a balanced public electricity grid with an electrically operated salt plant and chlorine plant. We do this by providing emergency power at certain times. We are also working on implementing two new electric salt plants and electrifying the chlorine plant's caustic evaporation. In this new situation, Nobian in Delfzijl hardly uses any natural gas.
