Nobian and Gas Storage Denmark sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

To Explore Potential Energy Storage Collaboration in Denmark

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

  • Gas Storage Denmark A/S and Nobian Dansk Salt A/S have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore potential cooperation in developing energy storage caverns in Denmark.
  • This collaboration aims to support the energy transition by leveraging Gas Storage Denmark’s expertise in underground gas storage and Nobian Dansk Salt’s extensive experience in salt cavern development.
  • The MoU was signed as part of the working visit of His Majesty King Willem Alexander of the Kingdom of The Netherlands to Denmark and Norway on 12-13 November, in the presence of His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway.

Balancing partner and hydrogen solutions

Michael Koenig, CEO of Nobian: “Nobian Dansk Salt is uniquely positioned to contribute to the hydrogen infrastructure and the hydrogen economy. To build sustainable hydrogen chains, we must promote knowledge sharing, research, technological innovation, and infrastructure development. This collaboration, the first hydrogen storage partnership between partners in the Netherlands and Denmark, addresses the need to develop hydrogen storage solutions in Denmark.”

Nobian Dansk Salt’s site director, Søren Møller: “We are very pleased with this collaboration, which aligns perfectly with our new role as a key enabler and balancing partner in green energy production, storage, and grid stability. Leveraging our many years of experience in salt and steam production, Nobian Dansk Salt aims to deliver large-scale hydrogen storage solutions, which are key to the future flexibility and stability of the hydrogen grid.”

By exploring the development of hydrogen storage caverns, both companies aim to support and unlock Denmark's renewable energy potential and position the country as a leading hub for hydrogen in the Nordic region. The collaboration is part of our ambitious “Grow Greener Together” sustainability program. Nobian aims to be one of the most sustainable chemical companies in the EU, and to be carbon-neutral by 2040, using 100% renewable electricity.

Supporting the green transition

Gas Storage Denmark’s CEO, Martin Christensen: “In a future green energy system, where a significantly larger share of production will come from variable sources like wind and solar, the challenge of balancing the energy system will intensify. Green hydrogen produced from renewable sources, along with hydrogen storage, is anticipated to play a critical and decisive role. Not only in ensuring a steady supply of green fuels but also in maintaining a constant balance between electricity production and consumption. Gas Storage Denmark has decades of experience in energy storage, and together with Nobian Dansk Salt, we will explore new opportunities to support the green transition."

Dutch hydrogen mission to Denmark

The MoU has been signed during a conference as part of the working visit of His Majesty King Willem Alexander of the Kingdom of The Netherlands to Denmark and Norway on 12-13 November 2024. He was accompanied by Sophie Hermans, Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth. The visit was focused on the development of the hydrogen market in Northwestern Europe, with the main themes being hydrogen and the energy system of the future. His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway joined the King for parts of the program. A Dutch business delegation active in the area of hydrogen and energy infrastructure, including Nobian, also participated.
