Letter of Support underground hydrogen storage presented to Dutch Parliament's Climate Policy and Green Growth Committee

14 January 2025

Today, Members of the Dutch Parliament from the Committee for Climate Policy and Green Growth received a Letter of Support from 11 key players in the hydrogen value chain, including Nobian, to accelerate the development of underground hydrogen storage in the Netherlands. This follows the earlier handover of the Letter of Support to Nel Aland (Envoy for Energy Storage) and Kees Hansma (Director Transition Deep Underground) of the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth in December 2024.

The signatories to the letter emphasized to the Members of Parliament the importance of having a clear political and policy vision on underground hydrogen storage in the Netherlands as soon as possible. They call on the Members of Parliament to highlight the importance of an  accelerated and timely development of underground hydrogen storage in the parliamentary debate on hydrogen on January 16th, 2025. Underground hydrogen storage is indispensable for a functioning hydrogen infrastructure and market in the Netherlands by balancing hydrogen supply and demand, ensuring security of supply and supporting the optimal use of renewable electricity.

Salt caverns are highly suitable for large-scale, fast-cycle hydrogen storage and are currently the only proven and available technology for large-scale underground hydrogen storage. The signatories urge that the additional funding available in the Dutch Climate Fund (€102 million) is used as a first step to secure the necessary no-regret actions to support the development of salt caverns for hydrogen storage.
