Nobian started developing its low carbon product portfolio in 2018 with the certification of hydrogen, followed by chlorine and caustic in 2022. Since then, Nobian has successfully built its portfolio of low carbon products for customers. All low carbon products have independently verified LCAs and a few sites also have an EPD®.

To be fully transparent about the environmental profile of our products, we perform Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) on our entire product range. The scope of the LCA covers everything from raw materials through to delivery of the product to our customers. The collection and verification of all the underlying data, as well as the setting up the LCA models, has been done in collaboration with independent consultancy Ecomatters and is independently verified according to ISO 14040/40 by a certified third party. 

For low carbon products, we go one step further. The environmental footprint of all our ISCC PLUS and CertifHy certified products have been substantiated by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). EPDs are independently verified life cycle assessments carried out by a certified third party to the strictest ISO standards for calculating the environmental impact of products. This provides complete confidence in the published data. The EPD is publicly available and can be found on the EPD website. 

Nobian’s caustic soda and chlorine are certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), a world-leading certification system that aims to contribute to the implementation of environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable global supply chains. Certification is granted following a thorough annual audit by an independent third party, prior to verification by ISCC. This solution provides Nobian's customers with an environmentally friendly alternative  without compromising on quality, as the chemical properties of our ISCC PLUS products are identical to those of the fossil-based material.  

Our chlor-alkali plants in Delfzijl and Rotterdam are certified under the CertifHy® scheme and sell CertifHy® Guarantees of Origin (GvO). However, since April 2024, the Dutch Government has appointed VertiCer as the official issuer of H2 Guarantees of Origin (GoO) in the Netherlands. VertiCer is now the sole authorized entity to issue H2 GoO in the country. We are currently in the process of registering our Rotterdam plant with VertiCer to continue issuing H2 GoO from this location. 

The Nobian plant in Bitterfeld, Germany, is certified under the TÜV CMS 70® scheme, demonstrating the sustainable nature of hydrogen from production to transport and consumption.
